On October 14,Women in View was very proud to co-host with the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival a landmark gathering of fourteen leaders of women’s media organizations and unions as part of SJIWFF’s landmark 25th anniversary. The St. John’s Summit on Women in Media brought together representatives of over 40,000 professional members of Canada’s film and television industry concerned about the persistent under-representation of women in Canadian media. particularly in roles of creative authority.
In their joint Communique, delegates unanimously supported seven recommendations calling for changes in government policy to promote gender equity in employment and in the allocation of public funds for media production. They also recommend the establishment of an annual reporting system to increase accountability in Canada’s media industries.
